MQF LEVEL | 7 | ||||||||
ECTS CREDITS | 5 | ||||||||
DEPARTMENT | Architecture and Urban Design | ||||||||
DESCRIPTION | Through lectures and seminars, this study-unit encourages students to study the significance of interior space in architectural design, from the physical point of view, for example light, sound and tactile experiences, but also from the psychological point of view. Students are exposed to the works of a wide variety of interior designers and architects, and introduced to the basic concepts underlying these works. Inspiration, context, culture, form and function are examined. Typology and evolution of design and spaces are also dealt with. A section on material technology introduces the most common materials available for use in interior design, and how their properties influence their suitability to particular applications. This will be supplemented by site visits to factories, workshops and other specialist suppliers/craftsmen. Study-unit Aims: The study-unit aims at consolidating the fundamental principles of design of interior space, moving away from the traditional concepts of interior decoration, towards the more significant value of interior architecture. The study-unit will focus on contemporary issues concerning space planning, ergonomics, materials and colour and light. It will help students recognize and steer clear of consumer-oriented design in favour of good design, which has, at its basis, a solid and clear philosophy or concept that remains legible right down to the smallest detail of an interior. The study-unit aims to equip the student with the basic knowledge required for working within the realm of interior architecture, to empower the student to arrive at an accurate definition of a problem and to develop the sensibility to go beyond trends in favour of long-term solutions. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Understand interior space, how it is modulated, how it is handled, and how it influences human behaviour; - Demonstrate an understanding of the role of light, colour, texture and shadow in the creation of interior architecture; - Identify the parameters that affect the human perception of space; - Identify the material characteristics and technical properties that inform the use of such materials in interior architecture. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Select appropriate materials for the creation of interior spaces; - Design lighting and colour schemes intended to create specific modulations of interior space; - Specify material properties and methods of assembly to complement an interior architecture design scheme.
