DESCRIPTION This study-unit consists of fourteen two-hour seminars organised around visual presentations of landmark topics in the history of the cultural development of mankind. The material presented to the students is intended to provide a platform for an innovative and interactive teaching and learning exercise based on a series of multimedia visual stimulations intended to provide a widespectrum discussion that students will enjoy, hinged on the following specific themes and intended to also serve as an introduction to more specific studies in architectural history and theory in the first two years of the bachelorship course.

1 – Prehistoric period: Stonehenge and the Maltese Temples
2 – Ancient Egypt
3 - Greek architecture and its influence in Southern Italy
4 – Ancient, Republican and Imperial Rome
5 – The Byzantine Empire and its influence
6 – Early Medieval Architecture: The Romanesque and the Norman influence
7 – Gothic and late medieval architecture
8 – The birth of the Renaissance: Florence
9 – The diffusion of the renaissance architectural style
10 – High Renaissance and Mannerist architecture in Rome
11 –The Counter Reformation and the introduction of Baroque Architecture
12– Late Baroque architecture in the 18th century
13 – The Neoclassical period and the Industrial Revolution.

Aims:

The aims of this study-unit are mainly to assist students with:
a) Analysing a historical landmark in the history of the cultural development of mankind with the guiding principles and approaches discussed during this unit;
b) Distinguishing between various architectural and artistic landmarks as an introduction to more specific studies in architectural history and artistic movements.

Learning Outcomes
By the end of this study unit the student will be able to:

a) Describe the different architectural and artistic landmarks over the historical period covered by the course from the Prehistory up to the Modern and Contemporary;
b) Critically review by means of an assignment an important architectural/artistic landmark within its historical context.
