ECTS CREDITS 10

DEPARTMENT Faculty for the Built Environment

DESCRIPTION The Design Workshop is a practical, and thematic, design exercises, undertaken in a in a studio or workshop environment. The detailed design brief can vary from cohort to cohort, in accordance with the Occurrences (thematics) offered. Nevertheless, every design exercise requires an analysis of a design problem, the evaluation of design solutions, development of a selected design solution, and the preparation of detailed work, which may include calculations, reports, detail drawings, etc., as appropriate to the themes that the student needs to address in preparation for admission to the selected Master programme. The deliverables of the different occurrences are, therefore, similar, namely a portfolio of drawings showing the proposed design solution, at an appropriate degree of detail, together with technical documentation to support the design decisions. The work is presented during a viva review session.

Study-Unit Aims:

The objective of the study-unit is for the student to demonstrate the ability to apply the theoretical studies, followed in the previous semesters, to the solution of a design problem. The student is required to demonstrate technical competence in the thematic area selected. The design briefs will reflect the synoptic nature of the Design Project, with one major thematic and a number of minor thematics - to better integrate the different strands of study, as relevant to the Master programme selected. This technical competence is required so that students registering for the second stage of their professional studies have a reasonably sound basis on which to develop more advanced studies, as relevant to the Master degree programme selected. The detailed sets of skills that the student has to demonstrate is defined in the design brief of the respective Workshop. The study-unit is also designed to introduce students to the need to undertake independent research in order to address issues which are relevant to the design problem at hand. This is based on the philosophy that the course of studies cannot provide students with all the "knowledge" they require, but must give them the tools for them to seek, and critically evaluate, the information required, so as to creatively develop their design solutions.

This research has to be expressed in a critical design report, which is conceived as a prelude to the Dissertation in the Master programmes.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Use theoretical knowledge to address design problems taken from real-life scenarios, of medium difficulty, including the analysis of the design problem, the preparation and critical evaluation of design alternatives, the submission and justification of a selected design solution;
- Use existing sources of information, physical and on-line, to search for additional technical information on the design problem at hand.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

-Undertake independent research to support the development of design solutions, and to acquire the technical knowledge that supports design proposals;
- Use technical knowledge acquired over the previous semesters, as well as new knowledge acquired through research, to prepare technical details which inform the proposed project solutions, and which transform concepts into potentially realizable projects;
- Prepare a critical design report, highlighting the justification for the design decisions taken, using proper referencing and reporting language - a prelude to the Dissertation in the Master prgorammes;
- Orally defend a design concept - focusing on the soft skills of presentation and oral communication.

Main Text/s and any supplementary readings:

- Varies with theme.
- Assigned by Workshop leader.
