DESCRIPTION The objective of this study-unit is to provide practical advice and accompany Masters students throughout the completion of their masters dissertation. The study-unit will teach students how to identify a research question followed by a description of the main methods used in finance to conduct research. The study-unit will cover the main chapters that have to be included in a typical masters dissertation. The study-unit will also provide an introduction to the main research methods that can be used for their dissertation together with how-to explanations for using such methods successfully and when they are fully relevant. The study-unit will offer them advice on how to identify potential topics for their dissertation. The study unit will also teach them how to identify, download and manipulate data to be used in the empirical part

Study-Unit Aims:

The study-unit aims to provide students with knowledge and practical know-how related to the final dissertation part of the Masters degree. The study unit aims at providing students with advanced knowledge of how to identify topics for research, identify appropriate empirical methods to research their topics, and knowledge on how to identify and download suitable data for their dissertations.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Explain how to select appropriate resources for research;
- List the main academic journals in finance;
- Explain how to search academic journals using UoM Library sources and other relevant sources;
- Discuss the current state of the art of research in finance;
- List and explain the main research methods used in finance;
- Explain how to select the research method that is relevant to their choice of topic;
- Describe how to apply research methods rigorously and successfully;
- Explain how to interpret regression results.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Draft a literature review;
- Draft chapters, paragraphs and sentences to maximise readability and comprehension for their audience;
- Collect, download, and analyse data quantitatively;
- Establish a coherent outline for their dissertation;
- Present data and results of econometric regression in a reader-friendly way;
- Translate econometric results into recommendations for practitioners.
