DESCRIPTION | The study-unit provides an insight to practical issues in Modern Banking. Today, banks worldwide undertake various activities other than ‘pure’ or traditional commercial banking transactions. The unit will therefore examine topical issues in modern banking, drawing real examples from the major developments in business, international money transfer and financial services. Study-Unit Aims: To provide students with a deeper understanding of practical issues in banking and banking terminology, as well as to provide an insight to various international payment mechanisms and institutions that facilitate business transactions. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: 1. Differentiate between various banking instruments 2. Name the roles of institutions shaping modern banking and finance today and into the future 3. Explain the theory underpinning international banking and finance 4. List the activities that modern banks offer to their customers 5. Identify the main issues that banks managers face on a day-to-day basis 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: 1. Estimate the risks that a typical bank is exposed to 2. Rank banks in terms of profitability and risk profiles 3. Compare the safety of banks 4. Evaluate bank strategies 5. Distinguish different banking rules 6. Assess the challenges that modern banks face Main Text/s and any supplementary readings: 1.
