DESCRIPTION | This study-unit deals with four main areas: - development of restoration in the 19th century and the development of conservation in the 20th century; - the development of charters of conservation and the heritage law - in Italy and England and locally; - an introduction to urban conservation; - the methodology of a conservation project. Study-unit Aims: 1 - To introduce the field of conservation to the students as well as the basic prerequisites to operate within the field of conservation. 2. To introduce the key precedents and approaches to conservation of the built heritage. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Design and carry out a conservation project on cultural heritage; - Demonstrate how conservation/restoration developed into integrated conservation; - Choose the correct interventions and explain their legal implications depending on the value of the cultural heritage at hand. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Explain the roles of the key protagonists of conservation in the past, namely those in France, England, Italy and how these influenced the Maltese scenario; - Explain how legal structures in conservation developed in England, Italy and Malta. |
