Study-Unit Description

CODE CCE2313

TITLE Communications Theory

UM LEVEL 02 - Years 2, 3 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 5

ECTS CREDITS 5

DEPARTMENT Communications and Computer Engineering

DESCRIPTION This study-unit lays down the theoretical foundation of communications systems. The theory will also introduce the limitations imposed by noise in the system. The performance of the communications systems will also be discussed together with an introduction to information theory.

Study-unit Aims:

The study-unit aims at providing a solid background on communication systems. The concept on how data is captured, encoded, transmitted over a noisy channel, recovered and error corrected will be covered. This is essential to understand how a communications system is developed.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Understand how noise affects a communications system and how a noisy channel can be modelled;
- Understand how information can be encoded to reduce the amount of data needed for transmission;
- Understand how source encoded information is channel coded to improve transmission efficiency.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Model Additive White Gaussian Noise Channel;
- Quantify the effects of noise of both analogue and digital modulation schemes both baseband and passband;
- Derive the signal-to-noise ratio and probability of error performance measures for the major modulation schemes;
- Measure information of a source and build statistical source codes.
