Study-Unit Description

CODE CGS5020

TITLE Psycholinguistics

UM LEVEL 05 - Postgraduate Modular Diploma or Degree Course

MQF LEVEL 7

ECTS CREDITS 5

DEPARTMENT Cognitive Science

DESCRIPTION This study-unit will introduce the field of psycholinguistics as situated in between linguistics, psychology, and cognitive neuroscience.

It will cover all aspect of psycholinguistics, from first and second language acquisition, word recognition in both the spoken and written modality, semantic and syntactic aspects of language comprehension and language production. The course will also introduce foundational questions such as the evolution of language and languages.

The study-unit will consist of lectures introducing the general theoretical issues in the field supplemented by student presentations that focus on particular empirical studies.

Study-unit Aims:

The study-unit seeks to teach the interdisciplinary nature of psycholinguistics and the (consequently) many different methods used in psycholinguistic research, from field methods to brain imaging. Additionally, it will encourage the student to fully appreciate the methodological properties of psycholinguistic experiments, which usually require multiple subjects and multiple items, and a statistical technique that allows to deal with such properties. The unit aims to familiarize the students with such designs and also allow them to appreciate the complexity of such designs and prepare them to generate such a design themselves. With regard to the psychological experiment, a particular aim will be to focus on the difference between online and offline methods and how experiments with such method may challenge theoretical models.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Identify the main theoretical issues in contemporary psycholinguistics;
- Critically evaluate different psycholinguistic models against empirical evidence;
- Appreciate the differences between visual and spoken language.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Critique a theoretical model with reference to the empirical evidence for/against it;
- Think of potential additional evidence for or against a theoretical model;
- Implement an experiment with multiple items;
- Appreciate the interplay between the different fields contributing to psycholinguistics.
