Study-Unit Description

CODE CHE3480

TITLE Natural Products

UM LEVEL 03 - Years 2, 3, 4 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 6

ECTS CREDITS 4

DEPARTMENT Chemistry

DESCRIPTION The study-unit will expose students to the field of natural product chemistry with emphasis on different classes of natural products including carbohydrates, proteins, terpenes and lipids. During the study-unit, the discussion will focus on the occurrence, structure and chemical synthesis the natural products. The study-unit will, in addition, give an understanding of the use of natural products as starting materials in organic reactions.

Study-unit Aims:

The aims of the study-unit are to introduce to the students the main classes of natural products explain their reactivity and synthesis according to their structures with a focus on stereochemical aspects.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
1. Recognise a representative number of compounds belonging to the main classes of natural products.
2. Describe and name primary and secondary metabolites among natural products, according to their classification.
3. Explain their structure, properties and their main syntheses, including stereochemical aspects.
4. Predict their reactivity, according to the functional groups present in the structure.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
1. Illustrate three-dimensional stereochemistry in two dimensions.
2. Organise information and propose solutions to problems.
