DESCRIPTION This study-unit is suitable for applicants who have attended the classes of Chinese 1. It is designed for beginners to continue develop language skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing as it relates to everyday life situations. Further examples of Chinese sentence structure, grammar and commonly used Chinese Characters (the simplified Chinese characters) will be taught in the course.

Study-unit Aims:

1. To provide students with the practical knowledge and skills to recognise and reproduce a number of Chinese character (around 300 new individual Chinese characters).
2. To introduce new grammar structures and further examples of syntax in modern Chinese.
3. To enable students to understand modern Chinese related to topics of everyday life.
4. To provide students with the essential skills to read, comprehend and also write short passages in elementary Chinese.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1) recognise and write up to 300 new individual Chinese characters;
2) use approximately 1000 Chinese words and frequently used phrases;
3) master the basic Chinese grammar structures and simple syntax;
4) read, understand and speak Chinese to the level of HSK 1-2 (equivalent to A1-2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1) make a close reading of texts;
2) develop a greater attention to detail;
3) learn to dialogue better;
4) appreciate better other culture
