DESCRIPTION The study-unit provides a basic introduction to Information Systems. It aims to provide an understanding of the role of Information Systems in business organisations. The structures, application, uses and main types of Information Systems in organisations will be explained and discussed. The issue of data, transaction processing and data security aspects will be explained.

- Information Systems (IS) in organisations
- Information Systems updating and maintenance
- Information Systems life cycle and planning
- Implementing Information Systems in organisations
- Information System types. e.g. Decision Support Systems, Expert Systems,
- Web based systems and applications, Business Intelligence, Transaction
- processing systems, Database systems, Management Information Systems.
- Data capture and different types of data
- Securing data.
- Codes of practice and procedures for IT systems.
- Tools and technologies for IT systems

Study-Unit Aims:

This study-unit aims at introducing Information Systems at a basic level. The major and main structures of Information Systems will be described and explained along with the types of Information Systems present in organisations. The reasons for Information System updating will be dealt with. Systems life cycle and planning concepts will be explained. The successful implementation of Information systems in different organisatons will also be dealt with. Other key topics will be covered.

These are:

- different types of information systems,
- decision support systems,
- expert systems,
- web based systems,
- business intelligence,
- transaction processing,
- database systems,
- mangement information systems, etc.

The issue of data management in Information Systems will be dealt with. These are

- data capture and data types,
- securing data,
- backups and security procedures,
- codes of practice and procedures for IT systems.

Tools and technologies involved in IT will be explained.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Apply the use of Information Systems (IS) to organisations.
- Appreciate and understand the requirements for organisations to update their Information Systems constantly.
- Apply life cycle solutions and planning methods and solutions when developing different types of information systems. Also to appreciate information system structures.
- Apply problem solving skills to the main issues related to successfully implementing Information Systems in organisations
- Define and appreciate different types of Information Systems. e.g. Decision Support Systems, Expert Systems, Web based systems and applications, Business Intelligence, Transaction processing systems, Database systems, Management Information Systems.
- Apply knowlege to the relevance of data capture and different types of data like structured information and knowledge.
- Appreciate the importance of securing data. Understand the need and requirements for data backups and creating disaster recovery plans.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Identify the main charateristics of information systems and the problems associated with them.
- Apply basic problem solving techniques for the analysis of Information Systems.
- Select the best type of system for a problem scenario.
- Create a basic plan for implementing information systems.
- Distinguish structured vs unstructured Information Systems implementations.
- Select the best technologies for a particular Information System sccenario.
