DESCRIPTION | The aim of this unit is to introduce students to the background of databases and DBMSs, their use and architecture, concepts of database design and implementation and to teach basic skills and techniques in creating, updating and querying databases. An introduction to the database approach, characteristics, advantages and disadvantages of using a DBMS. Historical development and overview of current application areas. Use of databases for Datawarehousing, GIS, Data Mining and Multimedia applications. Issues related to different data formats The role of Databases in an organization. The types of users. The role of the Database administrator. The database application system life cycle. The principal components and architecture of a DBMS. The processes of database design and implementation. Database conceptualisation, modeling the database, logical and physical data independence, the three-schema conceptual architecture, The use and composition of ER diagrams. The development Entity Relationship diagrams from user requirements. The relational model, principal components, relational schema design. Conversion of ER model to Relational Schema model. Introduction to a formal database language -Relational Algebra, knowledge and use of basic relational operations. Structured Query Language basic DDL and DML commands covering the specification of tables and constraints, basic updating of data and various query operations Use of a relational database management systems is made though a number of practical / presentation. The lecturer provides unit material.
