DESCRIPTION | The beginning of the stuy-unit is dedicated to provide an understanding of the basics of databases and its associated terminology in use to describe data structures and data inter relationships. The study-unit quickly progresses to introduce the basics of SQL, a de facto standard for databases, for creating, updating and retrieving data from these data sources. After presenting basic data definition and manipulation constructs, attention is given for the retrieving of data through various combinations of restrictions, and combining data from a number of data sources. Of particular interest to information professionals is how SQL handles graph data and unstructured data, and controls interactions to a database through data driven coding. The later part of the stuy-unit relays on database management knowledge to build ebooks, web-pages through Content Management Systems (CMS), for example WordPress, and visualisation of data artefacts. To facilitate this basic knowledge of the web, web mark-up and styling languages (e.g. HTML, and CSS) are adopted. JSON and/or XML data encoding is also presented to enable the student's understanding and capability to read and export data from different repositories. Study-Unit Aims: The main aims are: - To provide an understanding of the pragmatics of building, marinating and using databases; - To encourage students to repack and present data in formats and layouts best suited for their data consumers; - To provide students with an appreciation and effective leverage of data visualisation. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Explain a relational database as expressed by its structural rules (e.g. tables, keys and other constraints). - Operate SQL and its main sub languages (e.g. definition, manipulation, control) constructs to manage and maintain a database. - Select the right SQL construct to extract the required data. - Test the data quality of content and the preprocessing procedures deployed over data sources. - Classify web interface artefact's and identify what support a web page through stored data is needed for creating the right active environment. - Assemble and select a better usage of web-pages and web-sites generators that can interface with local and external databases. 2. Skills: The following skills are to be realized by using high level and automated computerized tools, which have a multitude of libraries that are applicable in information management (e.g. WordPress and PostgreSQL): - Use of SQL to retrieve and transform data; - Use of SQL to monitor and maintain data quality; - Use of SQL to retrieve data from a few internal (e.g. local) data sources; - Use of SQL to retrieve data from a few external (e.g. other database) data sources; - Use appropriate data management tools and data languages to move data from one repository to another; - Use a Content Management System (CMS) to create web-pages to display and manipulate data related to information content; - Use of a CMS to weave together related web-pages into a site; - Use the right tool to visualize data held in databases.
