DESCRIPTION This study-unit will focus on the main principles involved in information system strategies. Different types and approaches to strategy exist both formal and informal. IS Strategies are based on practical principles in organisations. A structured view of what strategy is and the different definitions of strategy will be explained in the context of IS and IT. Students will be offered insight into how to identify different types of strategies and how these can be managed in a structured way for successful outcomes in organizations. The challenges and issues involved will be considered.

Different definitions of strategy will be discussed. Introduction to strategy and strategic management.

Strategic development for IS projects will be presented. This will complement other topics. Agile methods will be explained. These will be compared with the more traditional approaches along with their suggested use. Understanding and formulating web strategies. Use proper analytical tools in selecting the best alternatives. The development of e-Business strategies and planning of resources. Procurement and management of resources associated with the strategic planning.

Study-unit Aims:

The aim of the unit is to provide the student with a working structured approach to be able to define and solve strategic issues in IS management. The student will be exposed to a variety of strategic concepts that are normally overlooked and given a practical, theoretical and systematic approach for problem solving in this area.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Identify the different types of strategies according to different schools;
- Identify the concepts behind strategy, change and context within the scope of IS projects;
- Identify the need for well formulated and controlled positive strategies in IS;
- Explain the philosophies and principles underpinning different strategies;
- Comprehend the issues for web, e-Business, e- Commerce strategies;
- Distinguish between the various analytical techniques used for measuring strategy;
- Identify control structures and ways how to manage strategy;
- Identify problems that can render IS strategy unsuccessful.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Set up appropriate IS strategy plans;
- Identify effective strategies depending on the organisation type;
- Measure and manage strategic issues in IS;
- Apply corrective measures to problems that might arise from context, content or changing conditions;
- Reason about setting up frameworks or structured solutions that can help to accomplish long term IS strategy;
- Reason about the difference and similarities between IS and IT strategies;
- Participate in successful long term planning and management of strategic projects;
- Rationalize about the level of maturity reached in an organization as to the level of IS integration using a framework like the CMM ( capability maturity model);
- Measure the successfulness of strategic approaches using various methods of assessment;
- Implement strategies directed at web technologies and cloud solutions;
- Implement proper documentation to control strategies;
- Coordinate strategic planning with software engineering and other IS fields;
- Appreciate the need for good problem solving skills and quality issues involved in IS strategy.
