| DESCRIPTION | The dissertation study-unit is aimed at complementing the taught component of the degree programme, and provides space for students to research a topic in information systems. It provides each registered student with an opportunity to independently identify and investigate a research topic, considered by the Department/Faculty to be a suitable area of research that falls within the expertise of the allocated supervisor. A research challenge will be investigated, compared to related work, implemented, and evaluated. The research findings will be presented in a dissertation and an oral presentation, and defended during a viva-voce examination. They should be able to derive main goal and objectives to achieve the expected target of research, critically assess relevant literature, evaluate or test the planned artefact, and present the findings by writing a dissertation in accordance with Faculty guidelines. Study-Unit Aims: The aim of the dissertation is to provide students with a study-unit of independent research complementing the knowledge they will acquire during the taught components of the degree programme. - To apply appropriate scientific approach to propose innovation or improvement in an area of specialisation; - To develop skills pertaining to dissertation preparation and presentation methodology; - To develop skills in the research, testing, evaluation, presentation, defence and scientific procedure in a research area. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Critically analyze literature; - Identify and discuss open research problems; - Build upon the state of art technologies; - Evaluate the contribution being proposed; - Analyze research findings in order to draw conclusions; - Present research findings through proper reporting and oral presentations with due precision and rigour in relation to the dissertation topic. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Propose new ideas within research proposals; - Conduct original research under supervision; - Structure one’s thought in a logical manner; - Evaluate existing academic/industrial research results or commercial initiatives and their relation to the dissertation topic.
