DESCRIPTION | Through the further and deeper exercise in translation into Latin, students here consolidate their knowledge of Latin Grammar and pursue the major constructions of Syntax, such as indirect statement, command and question, relative with the subjunctive, verbs of fearing, gerund and gerundive, conditional, concessive, comparative, causal, and temporal. Invariably, students will also strengthen their knowledge of English syntax. Study-unit Aims: This study-unit is intended to train students in the following: - Consolidation of their knowledge of Latin grammar; - Major elements of syntax of the Latin Language; - Increase of confidence in coming to terms with difficulties in translation. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Identify most of the grammatical and the major syntactical issues of Latin; - In translating into Latin, recognise the major syntactical constructs in English sentences. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Translate into Latin more advanced sentences from English involving all major dimensions of grammar and syntax; - Approach issues of language and syntax with a sharp, analytical eye.
