DESCRIPTION | This study-unit is intended for to equip History students and others who might need to consult documents fully or partially written in Latin with the tools necessary for them to approach these texts with understanding and confidence. Students undertaking this course need to have no knowledge of the language, as all grammar elements will be discussed and explained during the lectures. Throughout this study-unit , the class will consider the most basic elements of Latin grammar. Additionally, reference will be made to changes in the vocabulary employed, to the style of dating, and to the expansion of abbreviations as they developed over the centuries. Throughout the course, frequent use will be made to a variety of sources in Latin derived from Malta’s numerous archives and published documentary sources on Maltese history. Study-unit Aims: This study-unit is intended for History students who, in the course of their studies and research, need to consult documents written in Latin. Its aim is to enable the said students to read, understand and faithfully translate documentary Latin sources. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Read, understand and faithfully translate easy Latin passages found in Melitensia; - Fully understand the dates, standard phrases and legal requisites for notarial documents, especially with regard to the more common forms of wills, marriage contracts and sales; also of Apostolic Visitations; - Use grammar books, dictionaries and/or lexica as tools for furthering their knowledge. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to read and understand further Latin passages in Melitensia documents not covered by the standard preambles by using the grammatical and lexical tools learned during the study-unit.
