DESCRIPTION This study-unit discusses the importance of looking at workers in a holistic manner. Students are thus exposed to four factors which when left unconsidered can have an impact upon the safety and health of workers. These include disability, gender, age and race.

Study-Unit Aims:

The study-unit aims to impart knowledge about factors relevant to gender, age, race and disability in order to facilitate an understanding of how such factors contribute or impact upon workers' health and safety at work. By means of undertaking this study-unit, participants would be able to assess occupational settings and design workplace interventions which are more holistic.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Discuss the financial and human benefits of designing healthy and inclusive work for individuals of different gender, age, disability and race in a final assessment.
- To evaluate the impact of gender on work and occupational health and safety factors in a variety of work settings during a final assessment, including gender differences in: occupational exposures and outcomes; absenteeism, disability, compensation and rehabilitation; research, legislation, resources, services and practices.
- Investigate the impact sexual orientation can have on individual's occupational health.
- Discuss during a final assessment how workplace assessment can take into consideration gender relevant factors.
- Establish the impact of gender mainstreaming on occupational health and safety by means of relevant case studies and during a final assessment.
- Recognise that the workforce is aging and illustrate the age-related changes that occur which effect occupational health and setting within a variety of work sectors during a final assessment.
- Analyse the changes age brings upon the human body in context of the aging workforce within Maltese workplaces, evaluate aging workers' workability and how work can be adapted during a final assessment.
- Describe and appraise the possible effects of young workers on their own health and safety and that of their co-workers and possible remedial actions during a final assessment.
- Assess via relevant case studies the issues and exposures migrant workers are exposed to within Maltese and international workplaces.
- Evaluate the methodology of conducting inclusive risk assessments within different sectors and industries which consider migrant issues and exposures during a final assessment.
- Illustrate during a final assessment the interventions and control measures which may be introduced to various workplaces in order to control for the challenges introduced by migrant workers.
- Describe the various physical and mental disabilities individuals may be experiencing at a place of work and their associated symptoms during a final assessment.
- By means of relevant case studies, evaluate the specific health and safety considerations disabilities at work introduce.
- Illustrate during a final assessment how inclusive risk assessment for individuals with disabilities is conducted within differing work places.
- Establish which control measures and work interventions can mitigate hazards and risk relevant to individuals who have disabilities by means of case studies during a final assessment.
- Discuss how an inclusive workplace can be fostered by means of practical examples within different workplaces during a final assessment.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- View individuals present in the workplace in a more holistic manner by carrying out workplace risk assessments which take into consideration the identification of hazards and risk factors which are pertinent to disability, gender, age and race.
- Foster a workplace that enhances and encourages active ageing through the development of ergonomic measures as well as the enhanced inclusion of workers with disabilities.
- Foster an inclusive workforce.
- Identify and develop interventions to control for the hazards and risks relevant to individuals with differing disabilities, genders, age groups and races.
- Enhance the ability to work in a team by analysing case studies via group work.
