DESCRIPTION Assessing, maintaining and improving the hygiene of a workplace is an essential skill for individuals working within the field of Occupational Health and Safety. The unit introduces participants to occupational hygiene and provides them with the knowledge, understanding and skills to both understand the principles of this topic and apply it within a range of occupational environments. Regulatory and legal obligations are detailed, as are applied in context to a range of workplace settings.

Study-Unit Aims:

The study-unit aims to:
- Educate participants about the definition, scope and basic principles of occupational hygiene whilst relating these to legislation and regulatory obligations.
- Inform students about substances of major workplace concern, occupational exposure limits and standards.
- Provide examples, practical application and practice of workplace assessment methods.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Define occupational hygiene, its scope and basic principles during a final assessment.
- Evaluate the role of the occupational hygienist in relation to other health and safety professionals during class discussion and a final assessment.
- Interpret occupational hygiene flowcharts for substances of major workplace concern during a final assessment including aerosols, such as dusts, mists and fumes, as well as gas vapour and biological hazards.
- Identify and discuss occupational hygiene assessment methods including the design of exposure measurement surveys, sampling of dusts, aerosols, gases and vapours and radiation.
- Relate assessment findings to occupational exposure limits and standards during a final assessment and determine relevant control measures and interventions.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Conduct occupational hygiene assessments, including exposure measurement surveys and sample dusts, aerosols, gases and vapours and radiation.
- Interpret occupational hygiene flowcharts.
- Demonstrate ability to choose and utilise monitoring equipment.
- Critically appraise existing measures of control.
- Develop relevant control measures.
- Maintain relevant record keeping.
