| DESCRIPTION | Human resource managers need to tackle a variety of different issues in their daily work. This study-unit enables students to understand how to carry out practical tasks required in the work of human resource managers. Students learn to apply theory to carry out tasks such as organising work, recruitment, training, succession planning and dismissals. They learn to deal with issues such as injury on duty, employee grievances and other matters that may disrupt the normal work routine. The study-unit makes use of case studies in order to delve into the dynamics of human resource management practices. Study-Unit Aims: The study-unit aims to teach students who already have a sound theoretical background of human resources, how to deal with practical issues relevant to the human resource function. The study-unit also examines the future of human resources. Students learn about ICT tools that may be used by human resource managers. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Appreciate more the complexities of the daily management of human resource departments; - Understand the role of key government entities that might be helpful in the work of human resource managers; - Comprehend some potential uses of ICT in human resource management. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Deal with government requirements (e.g. the completion of relevant documents); - Write human resource reports for different needs; - Develop and implement organisational policies and practices (e.g. orientation programmes, employee handbooks etc); - Apply a range of techniques to improve the relevance and importance of HR Management within their organisations; - Understand and apply practical solutions to the daily situations faced when managing human resource departments. Main Text/s and any supplementary readings: Main Texts: - Case studies to be provided during lectures; - Government Public Service Regulations; - Employment & Training Corporation Act; - Employment & Industrial Relations Act; - LinkedIn Recruitment Reports; - Local Salary and Financial Remuneration Reports; - Occupational Health & Safety Legislation (various); - Practical documentation including already implemented HR Policies, Contracts of Employment, Training Needs Analysis, Psychological/Psychometric Tests, Credit Ratings, etc.; - Articles from Leading Magazines including Harvard Business Review. Other related books and literature to be included in due course. |
