DESCRIPTION The dissertation is an essential component of the MA by Research. The student will select the area of study and enjoy considerable agency in designing the project, which will be undertaken in consultation with a supervisor.

By completing this research project, students will demonstrate their ability to apply the knowledge and skills they have gained in the course of the programme in the following areas; to conduct research (desk research as well as empirical and practical); to design a research project, focusing and framing their research appropriately; to utilise selected research methods and analyse data accordingly; and to present their findings clearly and coherently. The dissertation will offer students the opportunity to explore a particular area of their choice in greater depth, thereby gaining greater familiarity with the relevant literature and benefitting from a more specialised focus.

Study-Unit Aims:

The study-unit aims to:

- Give students the opportunity to explore an area of their choice in greater depth
- Enable students to demonstrate their skills in designing a project and applying the knowledge they have acquired
- Provide students with the experience of independent research and associated decision-making, under the guidance of a supervisor
- Provide students with training in practical research skills and their application in relation to theoretical frameworks

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Apply research skills and methodologies they have learned in the course of the programme
- Demonstrate in-depth knowledge of the chosen area
- Design and carry out their own research project
- Engage with theory and secondary sources and evaluate the literature
- Take a critical and self-reflexive perspective

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Present their findings and conclusions clearly and coherently in writing
- Design a project and make the necessary decisions
- Identify and select appropriate methodologies
- Think critically and develop a deeper understanding of an area


 
ADDITIONAL NOTES Pre-requisite Qualifications: Bachelor in Work and Human Resources (Honours), or Bachelor in Occupational Health and Safety (Honours), or equivalent

Pre-requisite Study-units: Research methods for work and organisational behaviour
