UM LEVEL | 01 - Year 1 in Modular Undergraduate Course
MQF LEVEL | 5 | ||||||||
ECTS CREDITS | 4 | ||||||||
DEPARTMENT | Human Communication Sciences and Disorders
DESCRIPTION | This study-unit explores the relevance of semantics and pragmatics to the speech-language pathology profession. Besides highlighting the essential role that semantics plays in child language acquisition and adult language use, it makes students aware of semantic impairments and relevant assessment methods. The fundamental concepts in the topics of pragmatics will also be introduced and linked to the clinical context. Pragmatic difficulties in children and adults with communication impairments will be outlined and different methods of assessment are presented. Study-unit Aims: This study-unit aims to introduce Communication Therapy students to the areas of semantics and pragmatics of language, while taking the clinical background into consideration. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: 1. Define key terms in the fields of semantics and pragmatics; 2. Explain the process of development of semantics and pragmatics in children; 3. Describe semantic and pragmatic impairments that may manifest themselves in children and adults; 4. Recognise and describe basic methods and tools relevant to the assessment of semantics and pragmatics. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: 1. Distinguish between key concepts in the study of semantics and pragmatics; 2. Identify stages in the development of semantic and pragmatic skills; 3. Recognise characteristics of semantic and pragmatic impairments; 4. Identify basic procedures employed in the assessment of semantics and pragmatics.
