DEPARTMENT Human Communication Sciences and Disorders

DESCRIPTION The ENT study-unit briefly covers the main topics in oto-rhino-laryngology as relevant to speech pathology students. Hence topics covered in rhinology are nasal obstruction, obstructive apnoea, chronic sinusitis and nasal allergy, especially focusing on their effect on speech and auditory development in young children. The audiology section deals with the embryological development of the auditory system and the acoustics of hearing from a anatomic-physiological aspect. Causes of congenital and acquired hearing losses are examined in detail with focus on common syndromic and non-syndromic hearing loss, otitis media and effect on speech. Relevant ENT conditions that may be encountered in the ENT clinics are also tackled as tinnitus and balance disorders. The throat section covers oral and throat infections with emphasis on adeno-tonsillitis and on referral criteria for adeno-tonsilectomy including myringotomy. The main conditions affecting vocal production will be touched upon while detailed focus will be made on swallowing and associated disorders.

Study-unit Aims:

The aims of this study-unit will be to introduce the speech pathology undergraduate to a good understanding of how ENT and speech pathology are intertwined in the management of many common conditions. Hence rhinology will help them understand the need and when to refer a client with hypo or hyper nasality of voice due to chronic sinusitis of enlarged adeno-tonsillar hypertrophy in a child. Likewise the lack of progress in a child with poor speech development may be jointly managed by an ENT colleague for possible surgical intervention. The student will also get a good grounding in the acoustics of the auditory system with an understanding of the genetics of hearing loss and recent advances in managing these pathologies. The study-unit also touches upon common ENT conditions assisting the student in their ENT clinical attachments.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

The speech pathology student should acquire a good understanding of ENT conditions and how these are closely linked to their own profession. Hence at the end of the unit the student will have a thorough understanding of the pain conditions in rhinology, audiology and laryngology and how they affect both speech development and normal function. The student will also be able to clearly elucidate the main referral criteria when a client should be referred for further investigation or even surgical intervention. Modern advances in both diagnostic tools and management should be grasped and understood in some detail.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Identify clients with communication difficulties who require further assessment by ENT specialist;
- Refer patients with ENT conditions;
- Have a good grounding in the diagnostic tools used in rhinology, audiology and laryngology assessments;
- Familiarize with basic ENT examination techniques.
