DESCRIPTION Students are expected to integrate theoretical understanding, knowledge and skills by presenting a clinical report detailing the communication and swallowing profile of a client (with a communication and/or swallowing disorder) that they would have been following during their clinical placement.

Study-Unit Aims:

- further expose the student to different clinical experiences
- provide the student with opportunities to work directly with clients with communication and/or swallowing disorders under the supervision of qualified speech language pathologists, who have received formal training in clinical mentorship
- enable the student to devise a well structured plan for the individual needs of the client
- promote the development of clear aims and objectives which are supported by relevant rationales and including reference to the evidence base
- encourage the student to discuss assessment and intervention approaches with qualified speech language pathologists, peers and academic staff
- enable students to reflect, self evaluate and think about effectiveness of therapy, recommedations for change to therapy plan and/or progress.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- describe the demographic and clinical profile of individuals with communication and/or swallowing difficulties
- specify assessment and intervention tools and approaches that are relevant for specific patients/clients
- take into account different sources of evidence that will lead to conclusions about differential diagnosis and therapy plan development
- describe the patients/clients' strengths and weaknesses in relation to communication and/or swallowing.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- administer and interpret assessment findings using a variety of tools and materials,
- discuss assessment findings with qualified speech language pathologists, peers and academic staff
- evaluate the client's communication skills and identify areas requiring intervention;
- reach a tentative differential diagnosis on the basis of assessment findings;
- plan and implement therapy sessions that aim to minimise the client's communication and/or swallowing difficulties while building on his/her strengths;
- consider relevant prognostic factors.
