DESCRIPTION The framework within which this study-unit is set up includes discussion of the application of aspects of linguistics and some practical applications examined. This unit is a condensed version of the original CMT4513. Most of the content will be similar though in-depth knowledge is not expected.

Study-unit Outline – Clinical Phonology:
- Distinction between a phonetic and phonological disorder and application of theories;
- the use of formal and informal assessment with bilingual children referred with speech sound difficulties;
- implications for Intervention.

Study-unit Outline – Clinical Semantics & Pragmatics:
- Pragmatic and semantic development;
- Approaches to the assessment of pragmatics and semantics;
- Approaches to SLP intervention and the role of the SLP in assessment and intervention with clients who have pragmatic and semantic difficulties.

Study-unit Outline – Clinical Morphology & Syntax:
- Separating levels of language for linguistic analysis and the interrelationships of these levels is examined;
- formal assessment procedures and management programmes;
- informal assessment of syntax and morphology within an integrative approach;
- establishing a client’s syntactic and morphological repertoire and functions of language.

Study-Unit Aims:

To enable the student to apply the basic concepts studied in the Linguistics Modules to the clinical situation.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Integrate all he/she has learnt in Phonetics and Phonology, Semantics and Pragmatics, Morphology and Syntax courses to assessment and diagnosis as well as management of clients within the local clinical settings.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Discover different ways of addressing clinical challenges related to specific client needs;
- Use the discussions and workshops carried out as part of the module as a source of knowledge and experience that can applied in a variety of ways with similar or different clients/groups including those with diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds..
