DESCRIPTION | Study-unit Aims: - To introduce students to the impact of material selection, and material sourcing, on the environment; - To review construction materials and their environmental performance, including the environmental aspects of the production, use and disposal of materials; - To introduce methods and tools for the assessment of material environmental implications in design. Learning Outcomes: - Ability to evaluate the environmental impact of renewable and non-renewable material resources; - Ability to assess the life cycle of materials, and the significance of end of life, and of re-cycling; - Awareness of national and international legislation and standards; - Ability to carry out eco-audits for construction materials; - Ability to select materials on the basis of material indices, and eco-performance.
