DESCRIPTION This study-unit provides an introduction to a range of evaluation techniques for the assessment of competing engineering projects. The study-unit covers the basic building blocks of economic appraisal.

Study-unit Aims:

The aims of the study-unit are:
- To introduce the concepts of economic appraisal such as time value of money, interest rates and time equivalence;
- The application of basic economic techniques to public and private project appraisal including cost-benefit analysis;
- The exploration of decision methods in appraisal such as Cost Effectiveness and Goal Achievement Matrix techniques.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of the basics of effective appraisals of alternative development schemes;
- Within a case study scenario, appraise a project using the Simple Addiditive Weighting (SAW) Model, the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) technique and Concordance Analysis.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Analyse a project's value characteristics within an established economic appraisal framework;
- Produce an executive management project appraisal report featuring all the key strategic issues that should be addressed by senior decision-making management levels.
