DESCRIPTION | This study-unit will provide students with studies that provide both theoretical and experiential understandings of group purpose, development, dynamics, leadership, methods, skills, and other group approaches in a multicultural society. They will be exposed to the various theories and practices of group counselling and taught the diverse skills involved. The study-unit will offer possibilities for the students to be in a group process and facilitate group process. Study-Unit Aims: The study-unit aims to provide the students with opportunities to consider principles of group dynamics, including group process components, developmental stage theories, group members' roles and behaviours, and therapeutic factors of group work. It also aims to expose students to group leadership or facilitation styles and approaches, including characteristics of various types of group leaders and leadership styles. Learning Outcomes: 1.Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Identify and describe the principles of group dynamics, including group process components, developmental stage theories, group members’ roles and behaviours, and the therapeutic factors of group work; - Describe and differentiate the various types of group leadership or facilitation styles and approaches, including characteristics of various types of group leaders and leadership styles; - Describe and compare and contrast theories of group counselling, including commonalities, distinguishing characteristics, and pertinent research and literature. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to demonstrate group counselling methods, including group counselling orientations and behaviours, appropriate selection criteria and methods, and methods of evaluation of effectiveness.
