DESCRIPTION | This study-unit aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of how supervision of counselling in groups is developed. It will cover theory and best practice based on current evidence-based research. It will enable students to critically debate the core issues in group supervision including ethical and cultural issues, and develop the skills necessary for effective group supervision. Study-unit Aims: This study unit aims to: • Introduce the theory and practice of group supervision in counselling; • Enable participants to develop a critical understanding of current and evidence-based research in group supervision, theory and practice; • Enable participants to develop a climate of empathy, respect, authenticity and creative purposefulness in group supervision; • Enable participants to work flexibly and assertively as a group leader with groups for counselling supervision; • Develop and enhance the skills necessary to work with cultural difference in group supervisory practice. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - develop an in-depth understanding of the facilitative role of the supervisor in group supervision; - appraise specific theoretical counselling approaches and models in group supervision; - appraise the structure and practice of groups in counselling supervision in terms of ethical and legal requirements; - articulate an understanding of how to manage the creative process in group supervision in relation to different supervisees’ theoretical models. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - develop and exercise the knowledge and skills needed to manage time and priorities in group supervision; - practise how to structure sessions and manage group process; - demonstrate a developing group leadership style that is active, assertive, situational and non-authoritarian; - establish and develop listening skills and responding to feedback from group members; - critically reflect on practice, including theories of cultural difference, in line with contemporary research on counselling group supervision.
