DESCRIPTION This study-unit offers participants the opportunity to observe and practice counselling supervision skills in both group and individual settings. This will facilitate a gradual induction into the professional roles that they will be expected to fulfill as counselling supervisors.

This gradual induction may include such activities as:
- structured observation of skilled practitioners;
- practicing of counselling supervision skills under the mentorship of one or more experienced and expert tutor/s;
- completing specific tasks related to responsibilities that participants will have once they qualify to practice.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit runs throughout the 2 semesters ensuring that participants engage with theory and practice at all times. This study-unit aims to introduce students to the practice of counselling supervision according to national and international research-based best practice. This unit will combine experiential and theoretical approaches, but will be predominantly practical and based in the counselling field, working with supervisees. Participants will have the opportunity to deepen their understanding of the theoretical knowledge acquired during the taught component of the course.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- demonstrate an understanding of diverse theories of reflective practice, including current research;
- critically analyse the implications of cultural difference in supervision sessions;
- identify how theory and practice are applied in the ethical practice and context of counselling supervision.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- demonstrate self-awareness in the development of ethical counselling supervision practice;
- apply a range of professional skills in counselling supervision, including contracting, working within the supervisee’s organisational context, report writing;
- demonstrate an ability to work with cultural difference in supervision;
- develop skills in enabling supervisees to work with cultural difference;
- critically reflect on practice in line with contemporary research on counselling supervision.

ADDITIONAL NOTES Due to the nature of this study-unit and the profile of a counsellor, students must obtain an obligatory pass (55%) in each assessment component, for an overall obligatory pass mark (55%) to be awarded.
