DESCRIPTION | This project is the research arm of the course and for which students will carry out the necessary fieldwork and write a dissertation. Different project areas will be made available, including molecular pharmacology, clinical pharmacology, and research on medicines use. Students will be required to apply the necessary data analysis methods, which are appropriate for the project in question. Study-unit Aims: The aim of this study-unit is to enable students to work on a research project, under academic supervision, and compile an appropriate dissertation on the work accomplished. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Plan and carry out a pharmacology based research project; - Discuss the rationale of the project undertaken; - Review the background knowledge around which the project is placed; - Describe in detail the project flow, the methodology used, and data generated; - Discuss the project outcomes, strengths and limitations; - Write a formal dissertation. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Use various resources in order to research the relevant topic, analytical protocols, relevant supporting research etc; - Identify strengths and weakness in research methodology; - Apply different research skills, according to the project requirements; - Apply appropriate data analysis procedures in order to obtain meaningful results; - Use specialized software where necessary; - Learn to work independently while under supervision as well as in a team; - Apply appropriate statistical analysis to research data; - Identify limitations of study and research undertaken; - Write effectively and scientifically; - Apply self critique and evaluation of research undertaken; - Contextualize the study outcomes within real world applications. ADDITIONAL NOTES | **September Assessment Session: Students who fail to obtain an overall pass mark will be re-examined in the Dissertation. However, the resit availability for the Oral Examination/Presentation is at the discretion of the Board of Examiners. | ||||||||
