TITLE Safe Drug Prescribing

UM LEVEL 05 - Postgraduate Modular Diploma or Degree Course

MQF LEVEL 7

ECTS CREDITS 2

DEPARTMENT Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics

DESCRIPTION Prescribing skills and prescribing drug safety are key skills for any Foundation Year doctor. This study-unit will provide a comprehensive basis of clinical pharmacology and therapeutics skills to prescribers in order to facilitate the core prescribing competencies required for these graduates. The sessions will cover a series of different skills such as prescribing, prescription chart review, planning management, communicating important information to patients, drug calculation skills, adverse drug reactions, monitoring therapy and data interpretation for various class of drugs.The unit will use lectures and tutorials to compliment and enhance case based learning.

Study-unit Aims:

- To ensure that prescribers demonstrate that they are safe and competent prescribers,with the necessary skills of deduction and problem-solving;
- To provide a sound foundation of therapeutic principles need to prescribe drugs safely, review prescription charts and planning management of drug use;
- To formulate a sound understanding of the principles underlying the actions and applications of the various classes of drugs in the clinical setting;
- To explain prescribing management protocols within the framework of various medical conditions and communicating important information to patients;
- To emphasize the safe and effective use of drugs, in prescribing decisions, while minimizing their potential adverse effects and avoiding potential interactions.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Demonstrate their competencies in relation to the safe and effective use of medicines;
- Explain the fundamental principles in the therapeutic use of drugs in various medical conditions;
- Recognize the importance of understanding the safe clinical use of of drugs;
- Appreciate the clinical rationale involved in the appropriate selection of drugs to the individual patient;
- Apply prescription chart reviews, planning management, and communicating important information to patients;
- Evaluate issues related to the safe and effective use of drugs such as prevention of drug interactions and adverse drug reactions;
- Apply drug calculation skills and data interpretation;
- Prevent the diversion of prescribed medications.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Integrate this knowledge in order to be able to prescribe safely and effectively and review prescriptions;
- Calculate correct drug doses, monitor drug therapy, and understand adverse drug interactions;
- Relate the knowledge of the mode of drug action to specific clinical scenarios;
- Apply fundamental pharmacological principles in prescribing decisions for these classes of drugs;
- Be aware of interpatient variability with respect to drug response in these classes of drugs and take appropriate action when needed;
- Apply basics safety principles when selecting and monitoring drug therapy.
