DESCRIPTION This study-unit comprises an overview of the main criminal law concepts found in the Maltese Criminal Code and the main criminal law legislation of Malta. It introduces the student to the correct usage of legal terms and language and the strict application to the law in the criminal law field vis-à-vis civil law. The group assignment is intended to promote the discussion and application of the new legal concepts acquired and to prepare the student for the written exam.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit aims:
(a) to familiarise the student to an introductory knowledge of law processes;
(b) to familiarise the student with Maltese law (with special emphasis on the Criminal Code, Chapter 9 of the Laws of Malta);
(c) to interlink Criminal Law to Criminal Procedure by introducing to the student the mechanisms regulating criminal, justice and the prosecution of criminal action.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
1. understand and discuss legal concepts and terms according to the Maltese criminal legislation;
2. appreciate the distinction between law and morality;
3. be familiar with the development of the Maltese legal system, its sources and historical milestones.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
1. apply legal terms and concepts correctly to criminological discourse;
2. locate and have access to Maltese laws, judgements and university theses;
3. acquire the ability to read and comprehend court judgements.

Students will be guided to consult the more recent criminal law theses, besides consulting the following texts:
