DESCRIPTION This study-unit covers two main topics: the Legal System and Legal Research. Students will be given a bird's eye view of the Maltese Legal System, various legal instruments and on–line tools to carry out legal research. A distinction will be made between the domestic and international legal order and the interaction between them. This study-unit will also introduce main legal principles, in particular those related to criminal law.

Students will also familiarize themselves with the existing basic punishments in the Maltese Criminal Justice system.

Study-unit Aims:

This unit aims to:

1) assist students in achieving an understanding of what constitutes the law making process in Malta;
2) focus on the creation of awareness of the body of laws applicable in Malta and the relevant research tools available;
3) deliver a situational analysis of the difference between the national and international legal order, in particular the extent of the application of EU legislation in Malta.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. discuss legal concepts and terms in the Maltese legal framework;
2. appreciate the distinction between national and international legal order;
3. demonstrate familiarity with the development of the Maltese legal system, its sources and historical milestones.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. apply legal terms and concepts correctly to criminological discourse;
2. locate and have access to Maltese laws and judgements;
3. read and comprehend court judgements.
