DESCRIPTION | The aim of this study-unit is to make students think critically about criminal law and procedure. A brief history will be followed by an explanation of the classification of criminal offences and punishment. The nature, extent and cost of crime as well as the structure and functions of the criminal courts will be addressed. These will be followed by an exposition of criminal liability, exemption from criminal responsibility and grounds for defence. An overview of the institution of bail, the European Convention on Human Rights, international investigation, co-operation and transfer of sentences will also be given. The unit will conclude with a discussion of the processing of criminal cases will be discussed. Learning Outcomes: By the end of the study-unit students will be able to: 1. Discuss and consider the difference with regards to the classification of offences 2. Assess the nature, extent and cost of crime 3. Discuss criminal responsibility and grounds for defence 4. Discuss international co-operation in Criminal Justice 5.
