DESCRIPTION | The aim of this study-unit is to provide students with a broad social, historical and theoretical basis for understanding drug use; enable students to be knowledgeably aware of the common drugs found in society as well as the emerging drugs; give participants an overview of addictive behaviours with emphasis on chemical dependency related to drug use; to make special reference to the adolescent period of the lifespan with respect to addictive behaviour; to review the variety of professional interventions from a multi-disciplinary perspective; and to discuss the role of professionals in the prevention and management of addictive behaviour. Study-unit Aims: - To familiarise students with the variety of drugs of abuse and their effect on society; - To make students aware of the response of the criminal justice to drug abuse. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Describe legal and illegal drugs; - Acquire an appreciation of society's reactions to drugs; - Critically assess arguments about the relationship of drugs and crime in society. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Interpret behaviours that can lead to drug abuse; - Be able to identify different drugs and their relevant drug paraphernalia including emerging drugs; - Distinguish between use, abuse, and addictions; - To analyze the various therapeutic programmes that exist and propose changes and alternatives; - To analyze the criminal justice reaction towards drugs.
