TITLE Practical Placement

MQF LEVEL 7

ECTS CREDITS 10

DEPARTMENT Criminology

DESCRIPTION This practical placement (100 hours) with probation officers is aimed at giving the students the experience of the probation set up. Students are not expected to follow probationers on their own, rather they should be allowed to follow cases with their mentors. By the end of this placement, a student should get a clear insight of the probation setting, the court environment, the correctional facilities and any other agency that collaborates closely with the probation unit. Mentors would be expected to familiarise students with Probation, routine problems and their solutions. Hence they would be expected to involve their trainees whenever possible and ethically correct to do so. Mentors would be asked to write an unbiased report on their trainee at the end of the practical placement. During this placement the student is expected to keep a logbook (reporting daily observations and linking academic knowledge to practical probation work).
Furthermore the student on the placement at the probation services should compile a final report. Besides the involvement of mentors, there would be tutors (based at the Institute of Forensic Studies) who would periodically conduct sporadic visits at the probation services and monitor the performance of students.
