Study-Unit Description

CODE CVE5652

TITLE Advanced Structural Design 2

UM LEVEL 05 - Postgraduate Modular Diploma or Degree Course

MQF LEVEL 7

ECTS CREDITS 5

DEPARTMENT Civil and Structural Engineering

DESCRIPTION This study-unit reprises the design of structural elements using steel, with a focus on the design philosophy of EN1993 and EN1994, which form part of the material codes of the Eurocode suite. The study-unit will address the assessment of flexural, shear and axial actions on structural steelwork elements, at both ultimate limit and serviceability limit states, and the design of connections between elements.

Study-unit Aims:

The main aim of the study-unit is to review the approach to structural engineering design of bending and compression elements fabricated primarily in steel, and making students familiar with the provisions and recommendations of EN1993 and 1994. The study-unit will focus on the design of multi-storey multi-frame steel structures, trusses, plate girders, castellated beams, latticed, battened and built-up columns, portal frames and industrial buildings, as well as composite concrete-steel systems.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Explain the application of limit-state theory, and appropriate material partial safety factors, to the design of steel or steel-concrete composite structures, as outlined in Eurocodes 3 and 4;
- Identify the basis of design for bending and compression steel elements;
- Discuss the significance of serviceability criteria, and the corresponding detailing rules;
- Synthesize the basis of connection design for steel structures.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Evaluate the ultimate load capacity of steel, and steel-concrete composite bending and compression elements;
- Design steel sections loaded by shear action and torque;
- Detail steel structures to the design standards of MSA EN 1993 and 1994, using the appropriate NDP document.
