DESCRIPTION | This study-unit provides students with the tools necessary to understand the organization of the courts of justice of civil jurisdiction: the superior and inferior courts; the jurisdiction of each court; their composition; the officers of court; and the relationship of these courts inter se and with other quasi-judicial bodies. Students will be taught the laws and case law relevant to the subject of this study-unit. Study-unit Aims: The aim of this study-unit is to equip the student with the necessary knowledge of the composition, jurisdiction and structure of the courts of justice of civil jurisdiction. It will focus on the first 97 articles of the Code of Organization and Civil Procedure. These deal with: the Courts of Justice generally; the Superior Courts; the Inferior Courts; the Registrar; Marshals, Ushers and Other Executive Officers; Archivists; Advocates; Legal Procurators; and Curators. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: (a) understand the court structure and the interaction between all the different courts; (b) know what are the duties of the various court officers within the administration of justice; (c) comprehend the jurisdiction of each court of justice of civil jurisdiction. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: (a) assess the court structure by setting out the functions and composition of each court; (b) identify the duties carried out by all court officers; (c) prepare a write up on the jurisdiction which is exercised by all the courts of justice of civil jurisdiction.
