| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit will provide students with an introduction to the main issues that disabled people face in their daily lives, with an opportunity to discuss these issues from different perspectives and examine how they are dealt with in the relevant literature. Different aspects of life will be dealt with, including health services, education, employment, leisure pursuits, relationships, as well as the social model of disability and the use of language when speaking about disabled people. The students will be presented with different situations related to different themes taken from the research literature in order to engage in a guided discussion on the theme, taking into account the importance of listening to the perspectives of disabled persons and of parents of disabled children. Throughout the study-unit, students will be required to produce short write-ups with reference to the discussions during each lecture, the research paper discussed and other relevant literature identified by the students. Study-Unit Aims: The aim of the study-unit is to introduce students to the main issues faced by disabled people in their bid to participate fully in the life of the community and to identify the barriers that disabled people face. Furthermore, the study-unit aims to introduce students to relevant literature that deals with the various themes and to provide them with the opportunity to discuss the issues raised during the lectures and in the literature both verbally and in writing. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - describe the main issues that are faced by disabled people in various aspects of their daily lives; - analyse the socially-created barriers that arise in specific situations in the lives of disabled people; - identify key disability issues as they are discussed in the relevant literature and how they relate to the issues discussed in the lectures. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - actively engage in discussions about the disabling barriers faced by disabled people in specific situations; - describe specific disability issues with reference to the relevant literature; - analyse these different issues in writing.
