Study-Unit Description

CODE DBS2208

TITLE Disabled People's Impairment-Related Issues

UM LEVEL 02 - Years 2, 3 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 5

ECTS CREDITS 4

DEPARTMENT Disability Studies

DESCRIPTION This study-unit is based on the acknowledgment that whilst disabled people share common issues that present them with challenges in their daily lives, they each have individual needs. These needs do not only stem from their specific lifestyles, networks of support, beliefs, values and motivations but also stem from the different impairment groups they belong to, for example, the needs of people with physical impairment are different from the needs of people with hearing impairment.

Therefore this study-unit will familiarise students with the various particular needs of people with physical, sensory, hidden, intellectual, and mental health impairments. The study-unit will also explore the ways in which intersectionalities of disability and gender, ethnicity, age, sexual orientation and religion may impact upon these different needs.

Study-Unit Aims:

- To expose students to the disability/impairment debate and how this dichotomy affects disabled people's lives on a daily basis.
- To familiarise students with the various impairment groups existing within the disability sector.
- To discuss different impairment types and their impact on disabled people's functional abilities.
- To explore the ways in which intersectionalities of disability and gender, ethnicity, age, sexual orientation and religion impact upon these different needs.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Distinguish between 'disability' and 'impairment';
- Explain the cause and effect of both disability and impairment, and the complex relationship between them;
- Understand the different types of impairment and the effect they have on disabled people's functional abilities;
- Describe the ways in which intersectionalities of disability and gender, ethnicity, age, sexual orientation and religion impact upon these different needs.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Critically analyse, during class discussions, discourses about impairment and disability;
- Present, during workshops, how different impairments and associations with other specific social groups impact disabled people's full participation in community life;
- Apply these discourses to at least one impairment group in a take-home case study.
