DESCRIPTION | This study-unit is conducted on an individual basis with students working on their own under the supervision of designated tutors. Students will be required to choose a specific theme that is not normally covered by the programme of studies and carry out reading, research and written work. The chosen theme will be approved by the supervisor and the coordinator of the study-unit. Although formal lectures are not included, tutorials will be held with the supervisor. The supervisor will help the student to articulate the theme; suggest methods of approaching and researching the theme; direct the student to original texts and secondary works that are essential reading about the theme; devise and implement a research plan whilst addressing any ethical issues; and determine target dates for each stage of the work to be completed by the student. Study-Unit Aims: This study-unit is aimed at guiding the student in the exploration of a specific theme that is not normally covered by the programme of studies. It will also introduce students to the research process and its implementation under the guidance of a supervisor. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Carry out independent but guided exploration of a chosen topic; - Identify, read and critique literature on the chosen topic; - Evaluate and analyse the literature on the chosen topic; - Understand the steps needed to carry out a small scale research project on the chosen topic. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Research and read around a chosen topic on an independent basis; - Devise and implement a small scale research project on the chosen topic; - Work towards specific deadlines as agreed with supervisor; - Write a long essay on the chosen topic and the research carried out. Reading list will depend on the specific topic chosen by student as approved by supervisor and study-unit coordinator. |
