DESCRIPTION This study-unit provides students with the opportunity of investigating a disability issue which is related to disability studies and is relevant in the lives of persons with disability through a review of the academic literature and documentation obtained from desk research. The students will be required to identify the topic, formulating the research question, identifying possible sources of information, planning the literature review and writing it. Throughout the whole process, students will be guided by a supervisor on a one-to-one basis. The study-unit will also enable students to engage in academic writing about disability issues at a higher level than that which they will have carried out so far.

Study-unit Aims:

- To enable students to carry out an in-depth literature review on a disability issue which is related to disability studies and is of relevance in the lives of persons with disability;
- To enable students to develop further their ability to carry out research about disability issues and write at length on a specific issue.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Identify disability issues which are relevant for persons with disability;
- Identify sources of various sources of information on a specific issue;
- Critically review the literature identified;
- Discuss the issue in relation to the literature in an extended piece of writing.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Formulate a research question related to disability studies;
- Critique academic literature and other written documentation related to that research question;
- Synthesise information obtained from reading and critique of the literature;
- Write an in-depth literature review addressing the research question.

Other readings will depend on each student's choice of topic.
