TITLE Disability Access Project

UM LEVEL 03 - Years 2, 3, 4 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 6

ECTS CREDITS 8

DEPARTMENT Disability Studies

DESCRIPTION In the first two years of their study and in the first semester of the third year, students taking Disability Studies as a Joint area of study at Bachelors level will have covered a wide range of disability issues related to rights, various life domains and different stages of the life course of disabled persons.

Through this new study-unit, students will be able to apply the knowledge and skills acquired through following the previous study-units in a supervised project. The project can either be a hands-on project carried out with disabled persons in collaboration with a disability organisation or a research project aimed at supporting progress in the disability sector.

At the start of the study-unit, students will attend 4 hours of lectures in order to discuss their ideas for the project together. Students will then be assigned a supervisor who will guide them throughout the project. Students will also be required to engage in online moderated discussions about each other’s work at specific stages of the implementation of their project, to make a class presentation about their project in a final seminar and to maintain a reflective diary throughout and present it at the end.

Study-unit Aims:

- To enable students to apply the knowledge and skills about disability acquired up to the first semester of the third year to a specific project;
- To enable students to identify disabling barriers – which can be attitudinal and/or environmental – in a specific situation and ways in which these barriers can be addressed;
- To appraise the effectiveness of current interventions in the chosen area for the project;
- To engage in discussions about their own work.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- apply previously acquired knowledge and skills about disability issues to a particular situation;
- identify disabling barriers in that particular situation;
- discuss the actions to be taken to address these barriers.

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- investigate specific disability barriers in a particular situation;
- create solutions to address these barriers;
- critique the outcome of their own project.
