DESCRIPTION This study-unit will introduce students to Storyboarding and Sequential Art, exploring the ability of sequential images as media to craft stories and their use in storyboarding and the graphic novel. In the initial part of the study-unit, students will learn terminology, camera language, shot selection, continuity and image composition for maximum impact when translating a written concept or script to a storyboard image sequence. Attention will also be given to character design, body language and facial expressions as effective storytelling tools. Central to this part of the study-unit will be the importance of the storyboard as an intermediary communication tool that exists in service of a different end product. The second part of the study-unit will focus on the differences between Storyboards and Sequential Art allowing students to exploit the Graphic Novel medium as an effective and independent narrative device. While relating to historical examples, the students will work in a variety of media which include traditional and digital to explore contemporary styles of sequential artmaking.

Several other technical and reference books will also be presented in class to inspire students and encourage them to diversify their information sources.

Study-Unit Aims:

- To deepen students’ knowledge and skills in drawing, perspective, design, color, writing and editing;
- To get students to work on both storyboard and graphic novel formats;
- To enhance students’ ability in visualizing narrative;
- To place students in a realistic production environment;
- To improve the student's ability to draw and express ideas with sketches.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- recognize panel design and layout as a narrative element;
- recognize the importance of image juxtaposition to create closure;
- explain the use of storyboarding as a communication tool;
- interpret textual narrative into original and creative visuals.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- create original and creative storyboards and graphic novels that communicate story through aesthetic processes;
- plan a sequence of camera shots to narrate a story;
- demonstrate an ability to work across media;
- interpret the processes of translation of text to image;
- sketch illustrated concepts that capture and explore ideas.
