| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit is divided into two parts, the first part tackles Documentary and Street Photography and the second part explores Journalism and Event Photography. The study-unit will be divided into two time periods – 7 weeks for the first topic and 7 weeks for the second topic. The study-unit will be conducted through the following route: History, Technique, Aesthetics and Practice. The two genres will be approached from a theoretical and practical route concurrently, training students to research the historical and the contextual, while applying technical skills and honing their aesthetic decision-making in order to produce their own body of work. Lectures will revolve around the genres’ histories, their aesthetics and their relation to contemporary practice. Students will be able to apply the various techniques adopted by the categories. This study-unit will reference a number of historic and contemporary photographers, helping students develop their analytical skills by discussing the same photographers’ work, as well as apply past and contemporary photographic methods in their own work. Learners will be encouraged to participate in class through active learning methods and collaborate with their peers for their practical sessions. Independent research is part of this study-unit’s methodology of learning and this in return will aid learners reach a clear understanding of the genres tackled. Study-Unit Aims: - To train the student in the key photography genres, guided by best practice taken from the history of photography. - To develop the student's unique voice in photographic practice. - To help the student to initiate a professional pathway in photographic practice. - To help the student understand the value of assigned work within real market situations. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Analyse factors that influenced historic and contemporary photographers within the genres’ contexts; - Identify the genres through photographic history and contemporary practice; - Discuss the influence of major historical and contemporary factors on photographers and their work; - Analyse the specific impact of these factors on photographers’ work and practice; - Express justified personal opinions on the photographers’ work. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Produce a body of work using various camera techniques and photographic processes related to the chosen photographic genres; - Employ a range of camera controls and related photographic processes correctly for the specific genres; - Apply compositional techniques and visual elements for specific creative effect and visual impact; - Review own work and practice to identify ways of how to improve technical and creative skills; - Generate a body of work with appropriate photographic images related to the genres.
