DESCRIPTION The aim of the study-unit is to prepare students for their end of course research project which includes both written and practice components. It seeks to answer salient questions related to the early stages of their research project up to submission stage. The study-unit tackles various aspects relating to the process, strategy, content and administrative procedures of the research project which is considered as the culmination of the three year course in Digital Arts.

The study-unit also aims to promote ideas generation and critical reflection in order to assist students in the development of their original project. It seeks to consolidate the link between the written and practice components and to revisit creative thinking approaches discussed in year one. The process leading to the realisation of the student's main research project can be daunting therefore it is essential to assist the student from the start, in order to be able to assume an effective self-directed approach, and to maintain a healthy, regular and effective rapport with the supervisor.

Study-Unit Aims:

- Discuss the structure of practice-led research;
- Communicate and explain the key stages (dates) of the research process;
- Consolidate rapport between student and supervisor/s;
- Unpack the ethics review form;
- Present effective time-management strategies;
- Explore possibilities for overcoming a creative-block;
- Foster idea generation strategies and reflective thought;
- Explain how to avoid plagiarism and how to use turn-it in;
- Promote an effective task-oriented approach to the research project.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Translate creative ideas into a research project;
- Generate ideas suitable for practice-led artistic research;
- Communicate effectively with the supervisor/s;
- Learn how to cope with the various aspects of the research process;
- Manage the research process effectively from start to end;
- Satisfactorily connect the written component with the practice;
- Investigate issues through creative thinking and artistic practice.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Design and abide by a realistic scheme of work;
- Initiate and successfully manage and complete a practice-led research project;
- Embrace an open-ended research approach that allows for multiple readings;
- Present a body of work that intertwines written and practice components.
