DESCRIPTION This study-unit prepares students to originate a Research Proposal for practice-based research in their area of specialisation within digital art and design.

Through seminar sessions, students will discuss and explore the nature of the study and how this relates and can be applied to their existent practice. Students will be encouraged to look at their previous work leading up to current interests; work by other artists/designers which might be relevant to or inform their study; other contexts which are related such as areas of art and design theory and visual communications.
Sessions will also focus on the media, methods and processes that can be applied as well as the relevant area of study within art and design, such as Graphic Design, Spatial Design, Visual Arts, Photography, Moving Image and so on. Issues of interdisciplinary processes will also be featured.

Study-unit Aims

• To make the student analyse and assess his/her current art and design practice and formulate a position statement.
• To introduce the students to the use of a reflective journal.
• To clarify the research methods applied in practice-based research in Art and Design.
• To initiate Contextual Review methodology.
• To initiate a structured process of articulation.

Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

• Be able to structure a research proposal in art and design at a Master's level;
• Initiate a process of reflective practice through the use of a journal and contextual review;
• Understand the practicalities of research, including setting and achieving realistic goals, planning, using resources, presentation skills;
• Initiate techniques for advancing knowledge and understanding, such as setting up a programme of reading and a literature review.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

• To mediate the MFA Project in terms of a Project and Dissertation;
• To create a research proposal appropriate for the dissemination of contemporary art and design to the creative and cultural industries, funding agencies and arts associations.
