DESCRIPTION This study-unit introduces the students to basic knowledge of the development of the dentition, diagnosis and management of dental disease and correction of growth anomalies in young patients. Also covered are the basic principles of growth and development of the face and jaws, the principles of tooth movement and the manufacture of orthodontic appliances.

Treatment approaches to the different classes of Malocclusion shall be described. The students will be exposed to the dental instruments and components used for orthodontic care and oral maintenance care in Orthodontics.

Study-unit Aims:

The aims of the study unit are to:

- Describe basic orthodontic terminology and concepts related to the process of orthodontic care;
- Provide a foundation for establishment of the role of the dental surgery assistant in relation to patients' orthodontic care.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Discuss the roles and responsibilities of dental surgery assistants practicing in orthodontic care settings;
- Discuss basic orthodontic concepts;
- Explain the role of Orthodontics in the dental care of patients, including the process of orthodontic referrals and the occasional requirements for a multidisciplinary approach;
- List materials, equipment, instruments and components pertaining to various orthodontic techniques.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Recognise different orthodontic appliances and label their constituents;
- Identify materials, equipment, instruments and components related to various orthodontic techniques;
- Prepare the operatory for orthodontic treatment;
- Support the operator closely during orthodontic treatment;
- Complete effective disinfection, storage, correct labelling and safe packaging of clinical work that needs to be sent to the lab;
- Pour dental impressions properly;
- Assist the operator in making arrangements for appropriate follow-up care;
- Communicate the concepts of oral health with orthodontic patients especially in relation to oral hygiene and maintenance of orthodontic appliances.

ADDITIONAL NOTES Attendance to scheduled sessions, inclusive of lectures/tutorials, practical, laboratory and clinical components is compulsory. Students who do not attend at least 90% of the scheduled sessions will not be allowed to sit for any of the assessment components mentioned below.
