DESCRIPTION In this study-unit the student is introduced to myofunctional appliances and their use in orthodontics. The anatomic and physiologic dynamics of orthodontics are also covered in this unit.

The unit also presents an in-depth study of the construction of myofunctional appliances.

Study-unit Aims:

The aims of the study-unit are:
- Introduce the student to complex tooth movement making use of the facial muscles as the primary activators of the appliances constructed.
- Present different types of myofunctional appliances.
- Present the construction of myofunctional appliances in relation to specific movements of the different occlusal classes of tooth relations.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Discuss the role of facial muscles on complex tooth movement with the use of the appliances constructed.
- Discuss different types of myofunctional appliances and their clinical indications.
- Discuss the construction of myofunctional appliances.
- Relate the various types of functional appliances in relation to different uses according to the jaw relation.
- Discuss designs with the clinician and alter the appliance construction according to the clinical need.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Construct myofunctional appliances as per clinical prescription.
- Modify and repair myofunctional appliances during treatment as per clinical prescription.

ADDITIONAL NOTES Attendance to scheduled sessions, inclusive of lectures/tutorials, practical, laboratory and clinical components is compulsory. Students who do not attend at least 90% of the scheduled sessions will not be allowed to sit for any of the assessment components mentioned below.
